Sealcoating has a place in Ohio, but only if you know what you’re buying. A proper application protects the asphalt binder from air and sunlight, keeping your driveway looking sharp and slowing surface brittleness. It also offers some shield against dripped oil or fuel. But sealcoating does not add structural strength—the black shine on top won’t fix cracks or extend the life of a driveway with a failed or wet base.

Crack filling is more important than sealing when it comes to extending pavement life. Filling and sealing even small cracks keeps water out of the base, preventing the kind of freeze-thaw destruction common in Ohio. Make sure your contractor is actually filling cracks and applying a squeegeed coat, not just spraying a watered-down mix. Every failed driveway in Ohio I’ve dug up has one enemy in common: water. With heavy clay under much of Ohio, drainage matters more than what you see on top. You need a minimum slope of 2% (about a quarter inch per foot) away from any structure. Most residential drives use either a gentle crown with water running off both sides, or a cross-slope that directs runoff to one edge. If the grade cannot be built with enough slope—say your drive slopes toward the house or garage—channel or trench drains are required to collect and reroute surface water. Where practical, always daylight drains to an open area, not a foundation or neighbor’s yard; otherwise, a dry well set well clear of pavement is the next best choice for infiltration.
Ponded water on your drive will freeze in winter, expand, and lift or crack the asphalt or concrete. Ohio’s freeze-thaw cycling is brutal in this way: the more water lingers, the more likely you’ll see heaving or early failure. With heavy clay, any water that seeps into the base stays trapped unless it’s intentionally diverted away, so your driveway must never be the low point. Redirecting your runoff onto a neighbor, whether law allows it or not, leads to costly disputes and sometimes mandatory corrective work after the fact.
